Grab Hire

What Is a Grab Lorry?

A grab lorry is an 8-wheel wagon with a hydraulic grab arm. Here's what it can reach and why it beats a skip for many jobs.

What is a grab lorry?

A grab lorry is an 8-wheel wagon with a hydraulic grab arm mounted on the back. The arm can reach out — typically up to around 8 metres — over walls, fences and hedges to pick up waste material and load it into the lorry's body.

This reach is what makes grab hire different from a skip. A skip sits on the ground and you have to barrow waste to it. A grab lorry reaches over obstacles and picks the waste up directly, which is far faster for large volumes.

What can a grab lorry remove?

Grab lorries are ideal for inert waste — excavated soil and spoil, rubble, broken concrete, brick, hard-core, tarmac, and mixed construction and demolition waste.

A single 8-wheel grab can collect up to roughly 16 tonnes in one visit — the equivalent of several skip loads. As licensed waste carriers, we provide waste transfer notes so your paperwork is in order.

Grab hire vs skip hire

A skip takes up space on your drive or the road (and may need a permit), and you have to load it by hand. A grab lorry turns up, reaches over the waste pile, loads it in minutes, and drives away — no permit, no skip sitting there for a week.

For larger volumes of inert waste, grab hire is usually faster and cheaper than multiple skips. For small amounts of mixed waste over a longer period, a skip may still make sense. We can advise on which suits your job.
