What a grab lorry can take
A grab lorry is designed for inert waste — material that won't decompose or contaminate. That includes: excavated soil and spoil, broken concrete, brick and block rubble, hardcore and crushed stone, tarmac, and mixed construction and demolition waste.
A single 8-wheel grab can collect up to roughly 16 tonnes in one visit — far more than a skip, and the grab arm reaches over walls and fences to load it.
What a grab lorry can't take
Grab lorries can't take hazardous waste — asbestos, chemicals, paint, oil, clinical waste, or electrical equipment. They also can't take general household waste, food waste, or green waste in any significant volume.
If you have mixed waste that includes non-inert material, separate it before the grab arrives. We can only take the inert fraction.
Preparing for a grab hire
Pile the waste where the grab arm can reach it — the arm extends about 8 metres from the wagon. Keep it accessible — don't park vehicles in front of the pile, and make sure the wagon can get close enough.
Check that the route to the pile is firm enough for a 32-tonne lorry. Soft ground after wet weather can be a problem. Call us to discuss if you're unsure.
