The difference in one sentence
Ready-mix concrete is mixed at a batching plant and driven to site in a rotating drum. Volumetric concrete is mixed on site, at the point of pour, from raw materials carried on the wagon.
Ready-mix concrete
Traditional ready-mix is batched at a fixed plant to a set mix design, loaded into a drum wagon and delivered. The drum keeps the concrete agitated on the journey, but the concrete is already mixed — you can't change the mix once it leaves the plant.
You order a set quantity. If you order too much, you pay for the surplus that goes back. If you order too little, you need a second delivery — and by then the first load may have started to set.
Volumetric concrete
Volumetric mixers carry the raw materials separately and mix on site. The concrete is fresh at the point of pour, the mix can be adjusted on the day, and you only pay for the quantity you actually pour.
For pours up to roughly 8m³, a single volumetric wagon can handle the whole job. For larger pours, you can schedule consecutive loads.
Which should you choose?
For most domestic and small commercial pours across South Wales, volumetric concrete is the better choice — fresher concrete, exact quantities, and no part-load charges.
For very large continuous pours where you need a high volume flowing steadily over hours, traditional ready-mix with multiple drum wagons may be more practical. We'll tell you honestly if that's the case for your project.
